Has your organization fully unlocked the potential of its Learning Management System (LMS)? In a recent HealthStream webinar entitled “Unlocking Success: Real Stories from HealthStream Clients” some of HealthStream’s LMS users shared how they transformed their organizations by more fully integrating their LMS.

The webinar was moderated by HealthStream’s Emily Dee, Solution Executive, Learning and Performance Sales and featured:

  • Tammy Deakle, Learning and Performance Management System Administrator, Infirmary Health
  • Michelle Marzullo, Enterprise Manager, IS Training, Temple University Health System

Infirmary Health and Temple University Health System

Both presenters began by sharing a bit about their organizations.

Located in Mobile, Alabama, Infirmary Health serves an 11-county area with three acute care hospitals, two rehabilitation hospitals, a long-term acute care hospital, two freestanding emergency departments and a network of more than 60 physician clinics. Infirmary Health has more than 6,200 employees.

Marzullo shared that Temple University Health System, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a major academic health system with three acute care campuses, a comprehensive cancer center, a behavioral health campus, a ground and air transport team, a vast network of more than 1,500 community based, primary and specialty care physicians and 10,000 employees.

Exploring the Value of LMS Utilization

Both Deakle and Marzullo shared that their organizations began by using the HealthStream LMS as a means of delivering content for online orientation, annual learning, compliance training and as a content management system.

Deakle shared that the uses have since expanded to include the scheduling and tracking of live and virtual learning, point=of-care learning, elective learning, skills validation, and performance and competency management. Marzullo and Temple University Health System have also expanded their use of HealthStream’s LMS. Marzullo appreciates how HealthStream’s tools have helped her organization to standardize content and how it is delivered, along with the ability to streamline processes and systems thereby saving time for employees and money for the organization.

The Case of a One-Stop Shop

Marzullo also shared that having a single source of truth for all things related to learning and compliance at Temple was helpful to the system and to employees. HealthStream is able to deliver engaging content for employees and has created an easy means of engagement for students and an efficient way for leaders to track and manage learning initiatives. It has also created time savings for Temple as students know where to go to find the education and can access that content wherever they are working within the system’s large network.

Deakle shared that automating onboarding and standard learning assignments helped to ensure that staff were actually getting required learning which leaders were easily able to track and confirm through the LMS. Learners at Infirmary Health also appreciate the ability to access content on multiple devices giving them the ability to tap into their learning at a nurse’s station computer, in a breakroom, or on a tablet or phone.

A Good Fit for New Graduates and Experienced Nurses

Marzullo and Temple see a yearly influx of new nurses and medical students. She shared that these cohorts are very familiar with technology and with online learning as a means of supporting their continuing education goals and professional development. “Because of that familiarity, there is less of a learning curve as they transition to work at the system,” said Marzullo. In addition, Marzullo appreciates being able to provide learners with up-to-date content and healthcare industry-specific best practices.

More tenured staff at Infirmary Health appreciate the ability to select their learning through CE Unlimited. Experienced staff also appreciate SafetyQ and its streamlined approach to education. In addition, jane™ AI helps new and experienced nurses to bridge the gap between what they already know and what they need to know by providing assessments that point learners to content that is specifically tailored to their learning needs. “Learners and leaders value the individually-tailored learning environment and the reduced seat time so that they are not spending time on topics that they have already mastered,” said Deakle.

Features that Matter to Learners and Leaders

Dee asked Marzullo and Deakle about the features that they felt provided the most value for learners at their organizations. In addition to the ability to access content on multiple devices, Deakle shared that leaders found the MyTeam Dashboard to be a “game changer” for compliance tracking and all learning reporting. She also appreciated the calendar on the MyTeam dashboard as it provides real time information on which staff are scheduled for classes, and is useful to leaders as they develop schedules. She shared that she and other leaders also value the MyTeam calendar which includes information on birthdays and work anniversaries.

Marzullo shared that she and her team found the Highlights page to be useful in helping to socialize corporate initiatives by helping to engage staff and promoting learning initiatives.

Your LMS Provides a Wide Range of Solutions

Deakle shared that HealthStream has become ingrained in the culture of Infirmary Health. So much so, that it is not unusual for her to get a call from a leader wishing to tap into HealthStream resources during the planning stages of a new initiative. Recently, they were able to add about 1,000 contract providers into the HealthStream LMS to facilitate the assignment of learning tasks making it easier for their medical staff services office to track course completion prior to an application of privileges being presented for approval.

Marzullo shared that HealthStream video solved firewall and security issues as it allowed them to embed YouTube content when appropriate. Embedding the videos ensures that vetted content can be accessed quickly and efficiently by learners.
