Learning Without Limits: The Advantage of Unlimited CEs

Intentional strategies designed to engage, support, and retain your current staff and recruit additional staff are essential in a healthcare environment where staffing shortages remain a top priority for healthcare leaders. Solutions to help simplify onboarding, cross-train staff, and help staff easily meet licensure renewal requirements can help healthcare organizations stand out as the employer of choice.

A recent HealthStream webinar offered practical solutions for leaders wishing to develop their professional teams. The webinar was moderated by HealthStream’s Meghan Ficarra, Senior Product Manager, CE Unlimited and featured presenter, Heather Blackburn, RN, BSN, Senior Customer Success Manager, HealthStream.

Learning Without Limits – The Value

Blackburn reminded leaders that healthcare is continuing to evolve and become more complex, and as that occurs, it is critical to ensure that healthcare providers are competent and have full access to continuing education and professional development resources to create an environment of professionalism and improve retention. Blackburn went on to remind leaders that ongoing education and experience also serve to reduce a nurse’s exposure to risk and prepares them to make better, more informed decisions.

Ongoing development and certifications will also help your team validate their expertise and position them for recognition and advancement. It can also lead to improved confidence and satisfaction with their work and enhance their contributions to the organization.

Learning Without Limits – The Obstacles

While the value of a culture of lifelong learning is clear, that does not mean that there are no obstacles to creating that environment. Blackburn shared some of the most prevalent obstacles:

  • Some states do not require CEs.
  • Time constraints make it difficult to near impossible for staff to participate in professional development.
  • Financial constraints can make it hard to provide educational resources.
  • Adding development activities may make it more difficult to create a healthy work-life balance.
  • Dissatisfied and/or disengaged employees may simply lack the motivation to pursue professional development activities.

HealthStream’s CE Unlimited – An Overview

Blackburn shared that HealthStream’s CE Unlimited empowers nurses and other clinicians to take charge of their own professional development with a library that includes more than 2,000 courses and 40 specialty certification study aids. CE Unlimited is flexible. Courses can be assigned or learners may choose to self-enroll in them.

Individual learning preferences are important when considering the needs of adult learners and CE Unlimited is able to support those preferences. Learning formats include interactive eLearning, on-screen simulations, evidence-based best practice articles, and micro-learning to help learners digest bite-sized courses designed to improve focus and retention.

CE Unlimited – Library Overview

In addition to these trusted partners, HealthStream has a rigorous process for developing its own content. Blackburn shared that HealthStream has a highly experienced content development team that includes clinicians, educators, educational design experts, writers, editors, graphic designers, and an accreditation team. The content team has created additional libraries.

  • DigitalMed: This content is organized into collections that will support unit and organizational initiatives for nursing and other healthcare professionals across a wide range of areas of practice.
  • mySmart Healthcare: Blackburn describes these courses as highly interactive eLearning focusing on anatomy, physiology and routine clinical skills.
